One of the greatest displays of God's providential care is found in the life of Jacob. We first find Jacob in scripture as a trickster and liar. We soon see him fleeing for his life after he steals the blessing from his brother Esau. Things don't get much better for Jacob. After fleeing to his uncle Laban's house, he is swindled by Laban into working for him seven additional years. Poor Jacob finds himself on the run from his brother with two wives and a bunch of kids. His favorite wife dies, while later he is told his favorite son has died as well. Jacob is depressed and is quoted as saying, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage." Jacob swore he would go into the grave mourning his son. Like Jacob we sometimes think God is not paying attention to us. We feel he hasn't blessed us enough or given us all the things we desire. But it is always God's providence that causes us to have success in life. Life may not go according to our will but we should trust in his divine plan. It is God who controls all things, even the paths of our lives. He ultimately assures us that things work together for our good and we can always anticipate our future being better than the past, for He knows the end from the beginning. Toward the end of Jacob's life he finds out his favorite son, Joseph, is still alive. Jacob and his family travels to Egypt to live with Joseph. Genesis 47: 27 And Israel dwelled in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years. In the end Jacob lived a fruitful life, was in the beautiful land of Egypt, and even had the chance to bless his grandchildren. Trust in God no matter your age or situation and know that ultimately he has ordained it all. JS
